StratCheck: Vimeo Is For Hipsters, YouTube Is For Closers

You know, every time I pubcast one of my highly popular viral vidz on YouTube, I get about 10,000 Gmails, texts, Tweet messages and Foursquare shouts asking, “Hey, how come you didn’t put this out on Vimeo!?” So let me take this opportunity to answer everybody once and for all:

Vimeo is for aesthetically-obsessed hipsters, and YouTube is for people who want to get mad hits and win The Whole Internet™. I clearly fall into the latter category.

Now, I know this might not be a popular opinion in the Tumblrverse, as Tumblr is the basically the Vimeo of blogging platforms, but if you’ll indulge me for just a moment, I think I can make a pretty effective case for why only stratarded people would pick Vimeo as their viral vidcasting platform.

Below is my side-by-side comparison of YouTube v. Vimeo.

Advantages of YouTube:

  • Unlimited HD Uploading
  • Files up to 2 GB in size
  • Giant community of bajillions
  • Vastly preferred by relevant blogs and meme sites who embed vidz
  • Exposure/hit potential increased about 1,000,000x
  • 100% free to use (great ROI)
  • Lets you put in little notes to tell people about your Twitter and stuff
  • Hilarious commenters
  • Great monetization opps (you can put ads on your content!)
  • You’re part of the Google family
  • Tons of people get famous from YouTube every day
  • Double Rainbow Guy is on there

Advantages of Vimeo

  • Looks kinda cool/minimalist
  • You won’t get any views, but some art student might ‘heart’ your vid
  • Weird ass Lodwick bro who created it is on there (though even he’s on YouTube, too)

I think that settles that.
